IMG_3918Sundays at my house are our designated cleaning day. My husband and I work full time jobs, 9-5 (well, 8-5 for me, 9-6 for him), Monday – Friday, so weekdays are basically a bust by the time we get home, eat dinner and unwind. And Saturday is our day of Rest. But Sunday night, we have our friends over to watch Game of Thrones, so it forces us to do the chores we’ve been putting off all week.

This past Sunday, I wanted to make the house smell all pretty for people when they come over, so I a decided to do a simmer pot. A simmer pot is a cheap, natural air freshener for your home, created by simmering different herbs and fruits in a pot on your stove. Most ingredients can be found in your own kitchen, and if not, then the local grocery store. And you end up with a fresh aroma in your house that isn’t cause by chemicals in artificial air fresheners. I’ve read that you can re-use your simmers up to two times (depending on the ingredients) if you store them in a glass jar and put them in the fridge. The mixture should last a few days.

I’ve been reading about the different simmer pot recipes for a while now, and have been wanting to try one out. There are literally hundreds of them online. I tried to find one that was good for Summer time (because I live in California, and it was 90 out last weekend). Sadly, it seems most of the good ones are all Fall or Winter related (apples, cinnamon, etc, etc), so I took elements from the few Summer ones I found online, and combined them. It turned out pretty yummy smelling.

My recipe still needs some tweaking, because the smell only lasted a few hours, and according to what I’ve read, they should last all day. I used only sliced citrus fruits, and those tend to break apart fairly quickly, so that might have been it. I was also a bit heavy handed with the water, so that might have attributed to it also. Next time I’ll probably use half the amount of water, and mix in at least one or two halves along with the slices. The instructions said to fill up the pot 3/4 of the way with water, but I used a fairly large pot. I’m going to attempt again this weekend, I’ll let you guys know the outcome. Below is the recipe I came up with out of the ones I found online (this one and this one). Just know that if you try it, it might need some tweaking to get it to last longer 🙂


Summertime Simmer Pot Recipe (Citrus)

1 Large Grapefruit

2 Medium Oranges

2 Lemons

2 Limes

Coconut Extract

Pineapple Juice

  1. Fill a pot (I used a larger one for this, being that the grapefruit slices were on the larger side) 1/3 of the way with water.
  2. Slice the following
    3/4 of the Grapefruit
    1  1/4 Orange
    1 1/2 Lemons
    1 1/2 Limes
  3. The remainder, I squeezed the juices into the water (If you want, you can try just adding these parts as a whole into the water without squeezing)
  4. Add 1 teaspoon Coconut Extract (or just add until you get the smell you want)
  5. Add 10 ounces of Pineapple Juice
